چکیده

Radar rainfall data are affected by several types of error. Beside the error in the measurement of the rainfall reflectivity and its transformation into rainfall intensity, random errors can be generated by the temporal spacing of the radar scans. The aim of this work is to analize the sensitivity of the estimated rainfall maps to the radar sampling interval, i.e. the time interval between two consecutive radar scans. This analysis has been performed employing data collected with a polarimetric C-band radar in Rome, Italy. The radar data consist of reflectivity maps with a sampling interval of 1 min and a spatial resolution of 300 m, covering an area of 1296 km2. The transformation of the reflectivity maps in rainfall fields has been validated against rainfall data collected by a network of 14 raingauges distributed across the study area. Accumulated rainfall maps have been calculated for different spatial resolutions (from 300 m to 2400 m) and different sampling intervals (from 1 min to 16 min). The observed differences between the estimated rainfall maps are significant, showing that the sampling interval can be an important source of error in radar rainfall measurements.

With all the benefits weather radar provides to a community, measuring the amount and location of precipitation is unequivocally the most important worldwide. It is generally accepted that dual polarization weather radar provides significant improvement over conventional radar in measuring actual rainfall and quality comparisons of data. What is less understood but becoming more apparent, is th...

Area-intensity probability distributions of rainfall based on a large sample of radar data

The history of weather radar is, among other applications, a manifestation of quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), shown e.g. by Collier and Hardaker (2003). The main objective in such activities is to develop quantitatively accurate hydrological applications, especially nowcasting and warning systems of flash floods. The advantage of weather radars compared to conventional gauge networ...

Rainfall estimation and ground clutter rejection with dual polarization weather radar

Conventional radars, used for atmospheric remote sensing, usually operate at a single polarization and frequency to estimate storm parameters such as rainfallrate and water content. Because of the high variability of the drop size distribution conventional radars do not succeed in obtaining detailed information because they just use horizontal reflectivity. The potentiality of the dual-polarize...

Modeling Radar Rainfall Estimation Uncertainties: Random Error Model

Precipitation is a major input in hydrological models. Radar rainfall data compared with rain gauge measurements provide higher spatial and temporal resolutions. However, radar data obtained form reflectivity patterns are subject to various errors such as errors in reflectivity-rainfall Z-R relationships, variation in vertical profile of reflectivity, and spatial and temporal sampling among oth...

Rainfall rate retrieval in presence of path attenuation using C-band polarimetric weather radars

Weather radar systems are very suitable tools for the monitoring of extreme rainfall events providing measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution over a wide geographical area. Nevertheless, radar rainfall retrieval at C-band is prone to several error sources, such as rain path attenuation which affects the accuracy of inversion algorithms. In this paper, the so-called rain profiling...
